Dr. Howard Cohen of London has been placed on the “Known Genital Mutilators” directory at neonatalcutting.org.
From Dr. Cohen’s website, mohel-circumcision.co.uk
“Dear Parents
Thank you for your enquiry regarding circumcision.
Congratulations (Mazel Tov) on the birth (or the expected arrival) of your son. I am a full time GP and a mohel (ritual circumciser) for the London and South East UK Progressive Jewish community. I have been performing circumcisions since 1991 and I usually perform three or four a week.
Your son’s Brit Milah circumcision will usually be performed at my surgery, home visits may be possible depending on my schedule.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Howard Cohen”
So, Dr. Cohen is a General Practitioner who heals wounds and cures diseases, but also as a sideline practices genital mutilation on unwilling baby boys, which neither cures nor heals any disease.
Dr. Cohen and others like him should ask themselves if what they do violates their Hippocratic Oath, “First, Do No Harm.”
Under “About the Brit Milah Ceremony:”
Brit Mila (Covenant of the Word), is a key life cycle observance for a Jewish Family. By performing the circumcision we are celebrating and remembering G-d’s covenant with Abraham and his people.
The Ceremony
The Mohel (the ritual circumciser) will gather everyone together and explain the significance of the Brit. The baby will then be carried in to the room by his Kvaterin (or Godmother) and handed to his Kvater (or Godfather), whilst the opening prayers are said. The baby is then passed to the Sandek, who will hold him on his lap whilst the circumcision is performed.
Usually the Sandek has a pillow on his lap, covered by a towel and will sit opposite to the Mohel on two dinning room chairs (without arms). A small table next to the chairs for the Mohel’s instruments and the Kiddush wine would be useful.
The circumcision usually takes two or three minutes only, including the time to put a small dressing on.
After the circumcision, further prayers are said, including a blessing over wine and the naming of the baby.
Regardless of tradition and religious ritual, circumcision is barbaric and unethical. Watch this video of a reluctant Sandek (see above) who is horrified by what took place.
Also, under “Pros and Cons of Neonatal Circumcision:”
Before undertaking your son’s circumcision I will require both parents to sign a simple consent form. To help you do this I have summarised the available information of potential complications and indicated their likelihood. The figures are taken from a continuing audit of all circumcisions undertaken by members of the Reform & Liberal Association of Mohalim, these figures are updated annually.
I would like to emphasis that circumcision is a straightforward operation undertaken using a well proven and established method. Complication rates are low when compared to other surgical procedures and when they do occur can be sorted out promptly with minimal distress to the child or his parents.Cosmetic outcome
Circumcision is a cosmetic procedure. Occasionally the final appearance of the penis may give rise to concern. In our audit 1.4% (13 in 933) were felt to be a cause of concern by the participating doctors. Usually these improve over time but occasionally will need to be re-done at a later date, 9 such re-dos out of 933 circumcisions were reported in the audit.
Parents cannot consent for an infant regarding permanent amputation of body parts, making it unethical and illegal.
Now we see that circumcision is a cosmetic procedure. So, it’s a religious and a cosmetic procedure, two things that should be decided by the person concerned, no matter the age or sex.
Then we see “Circumcision and Pain Relief:”
Traditionally religious circumcision of newborn boys has been performed without any form of painkillers or anaesthetics. Although the baby will experience pain during the procedure, a straightforward circumcision takes less than a minute and the baby usually settles down quickly afterwards. I am prepared however to use a combination of techniques to reduce the trauma of the procedure if the parents wish.
Now that the AAP deems it harmful to circumcise infants due to pain affecting an undeveloped nervous system, Dr. Cohen would be wise to end this “trauma” by ending this surgery.
Since Dr. Cohen has incomplete information about the risks of circumcision, you can read that here at neonatalcutting.org.
