Too bad supposedly good medical professionals don’t recognize how unethical routine circumcision is; they should ask themselves if female genital mutilation is wrong and why that is.
When Ms. Ngcuka endorsed surgery over condoms to prevent STDs, I felt I was transported to the 19th century where circumcision was thought to cure everything from epilepsy to masturbation.
Why does the doctor perform this abuse on baby boys only? Because he can. It’s rightfully illegal for girls, and at any other age would necessitate general anesthesia because the pain – and no obvious need for it – would cause a violent confrontation. Babies can only cry out, which these mutilators ignore.
Cutting someone else’s genitals without consent is not a good idea outside of reasons of valid medical intervention. It is not a women’s issue, it is not a men’s issue, it is a people issue and must be approached as such. Stop gendering ungendered problems and stop spreading misinformation and relying on knee jerk emotional propaganda to manipulate people into ignoring the real issue.
If the ceremony isn’t about the circumcision, why do it at all? The bloodless naming ceremony is fine for the girls, why not for the boys?
