The practice of love service appeared first in [[Medieval Europe]] and was modeled on a combination of [[feudalism|feudalistic]] class distinctions, [[courtly love]] tenets, and gendered aspects of the [[chivalry|chivalric class code]] regarding respectful treatment of women.<ref>James A.
